IT Glossary
The WHOIS is a directory containing technical information about the holders of domain names and is free to access.
WHOIS data is collected and made available by the registrars.
As a matter of principle, the following categories of information should be presented on the WHOIS:
- Registrar;
- Domain name registration and expiration date ;
- Date of last update of the domain name ;
- Information about the domain name holder (when not anonymous) ;
- At least an email address or a contact form allowing to contact the holder;
- Administrative and technical contact information for the ;
- DNS server names ;
- Status of the domain name (according to a classification organized by ICANN).
Depending on the registry operators and registrars, the WHOIS database can be more or less detailed or summarized.
This information is available on the websites of the registrars or registry operators concerned.
The WHOIS can be used to determine whether a domain is available or soon to be available, but also to try to obtain information about its owner and to contact him or her if necessary.
As a matter of policy, and in accordance with their registry agreements withICANN, registry operators must maintain their WHOIS databases up to date and ensure their accuracy and reliability.
Inaccurate WHOIS information may result in the cancellation or suspension of the domain name concerned.
In order to comply with applicable laws and regulations, in particular the RGPD, services for the anonymization of personal data relating to domain name holders and fiduciary registration services have been developed.
As a result, these services no longer allow direct access to information about domain name holders who have not consented to their disclosure to their registrar.
